Taming the Chaos
“Freedom of Information in a Digital Age: The Current FOI
Landscape”
Delaware
Press Association and the Delaware Freedom of Information Coalition (DELCOG)
are partnering to bring you “Freedom of Information in a Digital Age: The
Current FOI Landscape," a ” We the People” event at the historic Goodstay
Center on the Wilmington Campus of the University of Delaware.
Our speaker, Ken Bunting, the executive director of the
National Freedom of Information Coalition (NFOIC), will talk about the
unrestricted free flow of information as a cornerstone of democracy and how
we’re doing regarding freedom of information and open government at the
national level. He then will zero in on open government issues here in
Delaware such as the increasing cost of access to that which the public
should have: access to records, access to courts, access to data. He will
address ease of access to public documents via the Internet, use of
digitized public information, weaknesses in Delaware’s Freedom of
Information Act, reform of state lobbying laws, the cost to the public when
easy access and open government are lacking, and more.
Bunting is a former Pulitzer Prize judge and former
associate publisher and executive editor of the Seattle
Post-Intelligencer where he was in charge of responses and strategy
regarding legal matters involving the newspaper and its staffers, including
copyrights, trademarks, and litigation as well as First Amendment and access
issues.

Taming the Chaos: When Politics and Economics Mix
Professor Charles M. Elson, the Edgar S. Woolard, Jr., Chair in Corporate
Governance and the Director of the John L. Weinberg Center for Corporate
Governance at the University of Delaware, is a leading authority on
corporate governance issues such as executive compensation, corporate
compliance, securities regulation, corporate legal matters and Delaware
issues. He will talk about taming the chaos when economics and politics mix.
Professor Elson has written extensively on the subject of
boards of directors and is a frequent contributor or expert commentator on
corporate governance issues through various scholarly and popular
publications and media interviews. He is a consultant and adviser in both
corporate and non-profit arenas and has served on boards that oversee CEO
succession, director evaluation, and director compensation; other boards
have benefitted from his expertise on strategic planning, risk governance,
corporate self-regulation, and coping with fraud and other illegal activity.
He has been a professor of law and a visiting professor at
several universities, including Stetson University College of Law (1990 –
2001) as well as the Cornell Law School and the University of Maryland
School of Law. He is vice chairman of the American Bar Association Business
Law Section’s Committee on Corporate Governance, a member of its Committee
on Corporate Laws, and is “of counsel” to the law firm of Holland & Knight,
one of the largest law firms in the world.
