The NFPW Communications Contest recognizes excellence in communications. The "message" — how well it communicates, how it is directed to its target audience, how well it achieves its objectives — is the judging standard. Entrants must be professional, student, or retired members of the National Federation of Press Women. The contest is managed through the state affiliates. Please contact state contest directors about statewide contests during the fall, because state deadlines usually are in December or January, to allow time for judging and processing for the national contest in the spring. In Delaware, contact DPA contest director Annie Nefosky at 302-834-6779 or annienefosky@yahoo.com.

Awards in any given category or sub-category shall be limited to first, second and third place and honorable mention. No ties are allowed. Judges may decide the number of awards to give within these limits (awards are to be given only if the judge deems them merited). Judges' decisions shall be final. All awards shall be honorary, except sweepstakes awards.

Sweepstakes winners are determined by a point system based on the number of entries per category. The individual sweepstakes winners receive a plaque and $250, 2nd place receives $150, and third receives $100. The affiliate with the highest number of points receives $100.
