Delaware Press Association offers an annual High School Communications Contest for student journalists statewide, with an opportunity for those who win a first in the DPA contest to enter the NFPW national competition. From time-to-time we offer seminars and workshops for high school journalists and their advisers, focusing on issues such as ethics and editorial responsibility, the new technology, and First Amendment rights and responsibilities. We believe it is vital to support these bright young future journalists and citizens, and we treat them as professional colleagues.

First State High School Communications Contest

Delaware Press Association and the Wilmington News Journal are co-sponsors of the annual First State High School Communications Contest for both public and private schools throughout the State of Delaware. All entries must be the work of high school journalism students and must have been published in the year immediately preceding the contest year (exact dates published on entry form).

Students may enter any of the following categories: Editorial, Opinion, Feature, News, Sports, Column, Feature Photo, Sports Photo, Cartooning, Graphics, Single Page Layout, Double Truck Layout, Reviews, Radio/News-Public Affairs, Environment, Video News Story, Video Feature Story and Video Sports Story. Each entry must be accompanied by an entry form and a $3.00 fee for each entry (checks should be made payable to: Delaware Press Association). A student may enter in more than one category, paying $3.00 per entry.

NOTE: all entries must be postmarked by the date specified on the entry form.

Professional journalists serve as contest judges. First, second, and third place and honorable mention will be awarded. The first place entry in each category will be sent on to the national competition. An awards luncheon takes place each spring to honor the state winners and their advisers.
